Coral Sea Kayaking Beyond Borders

Beyond Borders

Welcome to our Beyond Borders Expeditions. Our aim; to explore the far flung frontiers of the Coral Sea, to boldly kayak where no kayaker has paddled before and to keep the spirit of adventuring alive in this modern age of monotony and seek the unexplored places on an over explored globe.

On these unique kayak expeditions you will be an integral cog in an expedition team. You will explore destinations so wild, remote and beautiful they will exceed your imagination and you will encounter indigenous cultures that will enrich and soften even the most hardened adventurer.

The Forgotten Islands Of The Louisiade Archipelago

The Louisiade Archipelago is a remote island chain made up of hundreds of islands stretching over 400km east of the Papua New Guinea mainland. Its geographical isolation has helped to preserve its rich Melanesian culture and the area is host to its own incredibly rich Canoe culture. Within the Archipelago each island group has its own unique language, canoe designs and traditions- one thing everyone has in common is a love of paddling.

As enticing and as beautiful as they are, the islands of the Louisiade Archipelago are not for the average tourist. It is a difficult corner of the world to get to with flight delays and cancellations that frustrate the most toughened traveller, and once there, unexpected changes are to be expected. Whilst paddling conditions are often ideal, calm and picturesque, the Archipelago reaches precariously far out in the Coral Sea. This means that the area is subject to changing conditions, and not a sheltered millpond. Strong winds, ocean swells and some of the strongest tidal currents in the world are just a part of life in the Louisiades.

Louisiades Route Options

East Cape

Challenge: Medium

Kayak Ability: Beginner

Fitness: Low-Med

Isolation: Medium

Social Exchange: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Snorkelling: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Getting there: 💰💰💰

The eastern tip of PNG is called East Cape. This is a coastal kayaking trip with a little luxury along the way. The fitness demands are lower than our other trips in PNG. It includes some nights camping and some nights at Tawali resort to get to know the coastline comfort. The route is usually quite sheltered from prevailing wind and swell and there are no passages with strong currents to navigate.

Snorkelling is excellent along with opportunities to engage with local culture.

The Samarai Islands

Challenge: Moderate

Kayaking Ability: Intermediate

Fitness: Moderate

Isolation: Remote

Social Exchange: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Snorkelling: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Getting there: 💰💰💰🕒

The Western tip of the Louisiade Archipelago, the Samarai Islands offer incredible snorkelling, heart warming interactions with local people along with a stunning coastline. This really is a social trip, for people who want to get to know real life in the islands. There is a mix of small passages between  islands and coastal paddling. We can on remote island and sometimes near to local homesteads and villages.

The Calvados

Challenge: High

Kayak Ability: Proficient

Fitness Requirement: High

Isolation: Extremely Remote

Social Exchange: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Snorkelling: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Getting There: 💰💰💰💰🕒🕒🕒

Located approximately 250km East of mainland PNG, the Calvados is made up of picturesque, sparsely populated coral fringed atolls. Strong currents rip between each island and it is a stomach churning 20hr boat ride to get there from Alotau. Its a place so remote only the most dedicated sea kayakers would dare to visit.

How do I join a trip?

Fill out the Contact form below, however please note that going to the Louisiades should not be your first rodeo. These trips head out infrequently, often by request and sometimes fill up before they are offered to the public.

If you would like to join a Louisiades trip, our biggest tip is to join us for 6 days sea kayaking on Hinchinbrook Island first. Hinchinbrook is one of the worlds greatest Sea Kayak trips, so you really should go there! This helps you to get to know our camp systems, form a relationship with our guides and work on the skills and fitness needed before venturing into one of the most remote and inaccessible places in the world. It makes the whole experience safer and more enjoyable for everyone!

If for some reason or another you cannot join us on a Hinchinbrook trip, please ensure you add as much detail as possible to this contact form so that we can let you know when a trip comes up which might suit your skills &  experienc.

Which trips are you interested in?
Your flights are delayed for 2 days, then our original accomodation in Alotau is unable to host us anymore so we arrange another hotel instead, but now in order to reach the charter boat we have to carry our gear through a wet field. How do you feel?
Sour. PNG should offer better service!
A bit hard done by. Someone should have seen this coming and planned better!
Eager and stoked to start paddling! Complications are to be expected with travel in PNG, and I chose to come on this adventure knowing this :)
