The best time to complete a multi-day sea kayaking journey on Hinchinbrook Island is undoubtedly from May until October, but even in this window there are different trends in the weather to be aware of.
The characteristics of the sea kayaking season May-October are predominantly defined by warm waters, the South Easterly trade winds which blow through this period, and by clear, sunny stable weather associated with the North Queensland dry season. This trade wind helps us on our 100km, one way journey from Lucinda in the south, back up to Mission Beach in the North. Kayaking in this season means that if there is any wind or swell, it is almost always on our tails.
People of all skill, fitness and experience levels can enjoy our fully guided Sea Kayak tours on Hinchinbrook Island and this information can help you choose the best time to visit. On any given trip our experienced guides will make a safe plan based on the weather and the team.
May-June:
The earlier you go, there is slightly higher chance of rain. June often has lovely, sunny clear periods interspersed by a few days of rain here and there. It is also possible to have slightly higher wind and swell earlier in the season. We recommend trips early in the season to people who feel quite confident on the water & ocean and who have good camping experience. It is a joyful experience to have wind and swell on your tail, zooming through the ocean with warm water splashing and sun on your skin. We will often get to camp a bit earlier on trips with stronger wind and swell. Although sometimes intimidating, the ocean swells and winds we encounter rarely interrupt our plans.
Average High and Low Air Temperature: 20-25°C
Average Water Temperature: 25°C
Average Number of Rain Days per month: 6
July-August:
July and August are wonderful months to be out on the water. They often have large windows of sunny, calm weather. The North Queensland dry season is in full by this time. Days are often sunny and warm, there is often a tail wind and swell that help to blow us into our remote beach camp every evening. July and August expeditions can be enjoyed by complete beginners under the leadership of one of our experienced sea kayak guides.
Average High and Low Air Temperature: 18-24°C
Average Water Temperature: 24°C
Average Number of Rain Days per month: 4.5
September:
September is often the crowning jewel in the North Queensland sea kayak calendar. It is often characterized by longer periods of low wind and low swell. Days are warm and sunny, and it is generally when we get the most 'glassy' days out there. We recommend September for people who are less confident, but still wish to take on the challenge of a multi-day sea kayak expedition on the open ocean.
Average High and Low Air Temperature: 21-26°C
Average Water Temperature: 25°C
Average Number of Rain Days per month: 3
October:
By October the trade winds can begin to switch. You may have a wonderful tail wind, or it may swing around to your nose for some periods of time. The weather is warm and ocean is generally calm, however October is also when the ocean comes alive. Many species are breeding as the water warms up. This can be wonderful if witnessing smaller creatures, or intimidating with bigger ones.
Average High and Low Air Temperature: 23-27°C
Average Water Temperature: 26°C
Average Number of Rain Days per month: 3.5
A Changing Climate:
The trends outline above are based on historical data and years of observation running these trips. We present these averages and trends to help you plan, but be aware that the weather in any given week is entirely up to mother nature and it is possible to get a glassy week in June, just like it is possible to get a windy week in September.
